Agency does not guarantee control
A person can choose and act meaningfully without controlling other people, systems, timing, or the final outcome.
Agency is the capacity to participate in what happens next. Control would mean being able to determine the result. Human life offers the first far more often than the second.
Other people retain their own agency. Institutions impose constraints. Chance distributes opportunities unevenly. Conditions change between a decision and its consequences.
Recognising this should not produce passivity. It should produce more honest action:
- identify what can be influenced;
- name what remains outside control;
- choose risks consciously;
- keep enough capacity to adapt.
Freedom includes consequences, but consequence does not imply total responsibility for every outcome. Compare A good decision with a bad outcome and A bad decision rescued by luck.
